Caravan & Motorhome Solar Panel Installation

Please Note we are a mobile unit and only cover a 20 mile radius
please check you are in our coverage area before contacting us.

Adding a Solar Panel to your Caravan or Motorhome has many advantages, solar panels are manufactured in many different sizes, to accommodate users differing needs.

You may need a small Solar Panel to keep your tracker active while in storage, or a larger Solar Panel to support your lifestyle while off grid, even split the solar output to charge your vehicle battery and your leisure batteries. Whatever your needs there will be a solar panel solution for you.

Solar panels are designed to replace your leisure batteries energy. For example, what you use in an evening when the sun is not available is put back into your leisure battery the next day.

Please note if your vehicles leisure battery is not capable of lasting you through a day/evening then no amount of solar panels will be enough!

Potentially if the weather is overcast or your solar panel not in full sun then you may need to ensure that you leisure battery will last you longer than just an evening , we recommend your leisure battery should last you at least 3 days and nights to allow for bad weather and insufficientt charging.

For customers that require more of an off grid lifestyle we recommend upgrading to a lithium LiFePO4 battery(s) see our lithium page for more info

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Will i be able to run my kettle when not plugged into mains electric?
The short the answer is no, however with an inverter then yes but that is a lot of extra expense when you can use a gas kettle.
  • How big a solar panel will i need?
This is a big one, it is all dependant on your usage. (awaiting a calculator)
  • Do you need to drill hols in my roof?
Yes, however only for the cable to pass through, we no longer mechanically fix (screw) solar panels to roofs. We use  an MS Polymer adhesive.
  • Will it affect my warranty?
Not in our experience, We are an an NCC Approved Workshop so all work is undertaken to a standard.
  • Do I have to bring my leisure vehicle to you?
No we are an AWS Mobile workshop so we come to you, or your storage site.
  • How long does it take to install a solar panel?
We allow 4 hours for an installation.
  • Whats the average size solar panel people go for?
The most popular combination is, 100W German built solar panel connected through a 10amp LCD charge controller down to one leisure battery.

The 100 watt standard package

100W Rigid Frame German Monocrystalline Panel

This panel also features innovative 5 busbar solar cells, which are more efficient than the 2, 3 or 4 busbar solar cells used in most other solar panels, and are able to extract more power from the same surface area. This results in a smaller overall solar panel, which is ideal for applications where space is limited. These solar cells are also the best choice for applications in warmer climates, as they operate well even in high ambient temperatures.

In addition, solar cells are guaranteed to produce at least 90% of nominal power in 10 years after purchase and at least 80% of nominal power in 25 years after purchase. This warranty is provided by the manufacturer of solar cells.

Aero Solar Mounts
  • Ideal for bonding to the roof - no need for drilling
  • Minimum wind drag and a good looking installation
  • Great for motorhomes, campervans, caravans, vans and boats, but can also be used on other flat roofs
  • Enhanced security - once installed, the solar panel would not be easy to remove
  • Perfect for rigid frame solar panels with 67cm width

Solar charge controller

offering advanced monitoring of the charging process and a wide selection of load programming features, whilst providing full protection for your battery bank. This user-friendly controller also boasts an LCD display and convenient dual USB output for fast charging of USB-compatible devices.

The controller uses PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) technology which has the ability to increase charge acceptance and extend the lifespan of the battery. PWM technology can also recover some lost battery capacity.

Full system protection:

This charge controller features a full range of electronic safety functions including protection against reverse current at night (from the battery back to the solar panel) and automatic cut-off to prevent over-charging, deep discharge, overheating, overload, short circuit and reverse polarity (of the solar panels and batteries).

Advanced programming and monitoring features:

This model features an LCD display with multilevel menu operation and a user-friendly interface with two multifunctional buttons. The screen displays information regarding real time solar panel and battery performance, including: voltage, current, battery state of charge, and battery temperature. An energy statistics counter also displays the accumulated daily and monthly charge values (useful for comparing solar panel performance between different periods).

An optional 12V load (e.g. 12V lighting / fans) may also be connected directly to the solar charge controller, with various settings for night time lighting applications.

In addition, this controller also offers various charging programs for different battery types, which can be easily selected by the user.

Rapid USB charging:

This solar charge controller also offers the rare and highly sought-after feature of a dual USB charging output. These 5V USB ports have a total combined output of 2.4A, offering fast and powerful charging of USB compatible devices such as mobile phones, tablets, mp3 players etc.
